Robert's father was Andrew Main and his mother was Marion Arbuckle Peat. His maternal grandparents were Henry Peat and Janet Arbuckle. He had three brothers and four sisters, named John, Henry, Andrew, Janet, Helen, Mary and Elsie. He was the third youngest of the eight children.
