John's father was William Lorn and his mother was Jean Gardner.  His paternal grandparents were William Lorn and Barbra Miller; his maternal grandparents were John Gardiner and Elspet Walker. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Alexander, William, George, Isobel and Agnes.  He was the oldest of the six children.
