Alexander was born in 1786 in Kirknewton and his baptism took place there on July 30th, 1786.1   Alexander's father was John Johnston and his mother was Julian Gillis.  His maternal grandparents were Alexander Gillis and Elisabeth Auld. He had a brother and a sister, named John and Julian.  He was the youngest of the three children.
