Isabella's father was John Gray and her mother was Isabella Gibson. Her paternal grandparents were John Gray and Jean Reid. She had three brothers and three sisters, named Archibald, Henry, Adam, Jean, Isabella and Annie. She was the third oldest of the seven children. She died at the age of 3 in 1865 in Ayr.
