Girvan's father was James Girvan and his mother was Catherine Mathie.  His maternal grandparents were Alexander Mathie and Catherine Cameron. He had a brother named William.  He was the younger of the two children. He had two half-sisters named Helen and Ann.  He died by stillbirth or at birth on May 4th, 1846 in Loudon.  He was buried on May 4th, 1846 in Loudon.
