Rachel's father was James Gilfillan and her mother was Rachel Steen.  Her paternal grandparents were William Gilfillan and <Unknown>; her maternal grandparents were Joseph Steen and Jane Devenny. She had a brother and two sisters, named John, Jane and Mary.  She was the youngest of the four children.  She died due to a respiratory problem and/or pneumonia, pulmonary pthisis, cardiac failure, at the age of 40 on July 3rd, 1914 in Woodlands.
