John's father was Robert Dick and his mother was Janet Smeal. He had three brothers and three sisters, named William, Robert, George, Janet, Margaret and Marion.  He was the second oldest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 70 on October 22nd, 1871 in Mid Calder.²
