Jannett's father was James Byers and her mother was Janet Gibb. Her maternal grandparents were George Gibb and Helen Cunningham. She had eight brothers and a sister, named William, William, George, James, John, Margaret, Archibald, Janet and Ellen. She was the third oldest of the ten children.
