Alexander's father was Thomas Brown and his mother was Elisabeth Cunningham. His maternal grandparents were Alexander Cunningham and Margaret Mitchell. He had a brother and two sisters, named James, Margaret and Catherine. He was the second youngest of the four children. He died at the age of 2 in 1865 in Kirknewton.
