Robert's father was James McNab Brash and his mother was Barbara Drummond. His maternal grandparents were William Drummond and Jane Lodge. He had two brothers and three sisters, named David, William, Jeanie, Barbara and Elizabeth. He was the youngest of the six children. He had a half-brother and three half-sisters, named James, Margaret, Mary and Janet.
