Joanet's father was William Baxter and her mother was Janet Johnston.  Her paternal grandparents were Baxter and Anna High; her maternal grandparents were Robert Johnson and <Unknown>. She had seven brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, William, Robert, Andrew, James, William, Douglas, Elizabeth and Catherine.  She was the third oldest of the ten children.
