Mary's father was Charles Lennox Cumming and her mother was Mary Elizabeth Bruce. Her maternal grandparents were James Bruce and Elisabeth Spicer. She was an only child. She died at the age of 22 on July 7th, 1843 in Jamaica.¹

- International fine art auctioneers Bonhams will conduct their first fine furniture sale of 2003 on Tuesday, 11 February offering ..... a cabinet that housed a collection of Abyssinian artefacts amassed by the well known 18th century explorer, James Bruce.
  Another important consignment is a handsome rosewood chiffonier in the Regency style from the home of the Scottish adventurer, James Bruce (1730-1794), the first person to chart the Red Sea during his 11-year journey of Africa, surviving shipwreck and attacks from pirates. Bruce’s home Kinnaird was located on the Forth about eight miles to the west of Edinburgh. As an explorer, Bruce brought back artefacts from far-flung reaches such as Abyssinia. His family used the cabinet to store many of the pieces prior to the collection being distributed among his descendants before Kinnaird was demolished in the late 1800s. Most of the Abyssinian artefacts were passed to Bruce’s granddaughter, Elizabeth Cummings Bruce who married the 8th Earl of Elgin. The pieces formerly stored in the chiffonier were sold to Harvard University by the Elgin family (£2,500-4,000).
