John was born on May 18th, 1802.  John's father was Samuel JOHNSTON and his mother was Sarah "Sarey" PENNINGTON.  His maternal grandparents were Micajah PENNINGTON and Rachel JONES.  He had four brothers and a sister, named James, William, Samuel, Campbell and Jane or Jennie.  He was the second oldest of the six children.
