Henry was born in 1828.  Henry's father was James JOHNSTON and his mother was Margaret Peggy GAY.  His paternal grandparents were Samuel JOHNSTON and Sarah "Sarey" PENNINGTON; his maternal grandparents were Henry "Red" GAY "Red" GAY  and Margaret RUSSELL.  He had seven brothers and three sisters, named John, Samuel, Abraham, Robert, John R., James, Granville, . JEMIMIA, Polly and Susan.  He was the oldest of the eleven children.
