Mahala was born in 1840 in Grayson Co, KY.  Mahala's father was Benjamin P Wilson and her mother was Sarah Layman.  Her paternal grandparents were Samuel Wilson and Winney Lee; her maternal grandparents were Michael Layman and Sarah Sturm. She had two brothers named Marshall and Benjamin.  She was the oldest of the three children.
