William Porter Steele

  • William Porter Steele was the eldest
    child of Captain John (Jr.) and
    Jane Porter Steele, of Harmony Hall,
    Lancaster county. He was born November
    4, 1817, and died in New York
    City, November 2&, 1864. He was
    buried in old Leacock Churchyard on
    the King's Highway through Lancaster
    county. He was graduated at Rutgers
    College and studied law la Lancaster.
    He was 'married' to Frances
    Chase Barney, daughter of Commander
    Barney, U. S. N. His second wife
    was Elizabeth Harris, daughter of Dr.
    Frank Harris, of New York Oitfel Besides
    portrait painting, he was an interpreter,
    on canvas, of Shakespeare
    plays, and wag also a. painter of
    animal life. He was a fine linguist,
    brilliant in conversation and had a
    charming personality.
