    William Patterson was born in Lancaster Co, PA, on 14 Mar 1733. He was a farmer, and married Rosanna Scott of Cecil Co., MD (near Blue Ball) 16 Mar, 1758. She is the mother of his first five children; she died 5 Apr 1769, and is buried in the Chestnut Level Presbyterian Churchyard. William re-married, to Elizabeth Brown of Lancaster Co., PA., who bore ten children. William Patterson was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. He was a private in Capt. Thomas Whiteside's Company, Militia of Col. Thomas Porter's Battalion of Lancaster Co., mustered 13 Aug 1776. In 1778, after almost fifty years in Lancaster Co., William moved his family to Washington Co., on a 400 acre plot of land known as "Oddity". On this land, in 1794, he built a stone house to replace the original log cabin. William died 29 June 1818, and is buried in the Cross Creek graveyard.
