Patrick was born in 1855 in Horse Pasture, Henry, Virginia.  Patrick's father was John Marshall and his mother was America Preston.  His paternal grandparents were Peter Marshall and Elizabeth Lizzie. He had five brothers and four sisters, named Marshall, Peter, George Nelson, Daniel, Aaron, Josie, Nannie, Elizabeth and America.  He was the oldest of the ten children.
