John was born in 1813 in Addisville, Bucks Co., PA.  John's father was John Marshall Sr and his mother was Anna Eleanor Van Zant.  His paternal grandparents were James Marshall and Jane Lindsey; his maternal grandparents were Garrett Van Zant and Elizabeth Larue.  He was an only child.  He died at the age of 73 in 1886.
