Joseph was born about 1771 in NY.  Joseph's father is Capt John Doxstader (Dockstader Dogstider, Doghsteder, Doughstrader Dochstader) and his mother is Mohawk woman Mohawk (Mohawk).  His paternal grandparents are Henrich Doxstader and Catherine Van Antwerp. He has a brother and a sister, named John and Wari.  He is the second oldest of the three children. He has a half-brother and two half-sisters, named Adam, Mary and Catherine.
