William's father was Maj. John Downing and his mother was Hannah Fawling Falling (Ani'-Wa'ya = Wolf Clan).  His paternal grandparents are Maj. John Downing and Elizabeth Downing; his maternal grandfather was Redman Charles Falling (Fawling) and his maternal grandmother is Anna Beehunter (Ani'-Wa'ya = Wolf Clan). He had two brothers and a sister, named John, George and Nancy Nannie.
