Charlotte was born in 1881 in Balderton, Nottinghamshire.1   Charlotte's father was William Elson and her mother was Elizabeth.  Her paternal grandparents were Patterson Elson and Catherine. She had three brothers and seven sisters, named Joseph, George, Richard, Sarah, Annie, Eliza, Emily, Ellen, Alice and Lilian.  She was the fourth oldest of the eleven children.
