Effie H. was born in January 1887 in Person Co, NC. Effie H.'s father was James Ruffin Yarbrough and her mother was Frances 'Fannie' Gentry. Her paternal grandparents were Thomas 'Tom' Yarbrough and Sarah Ann Rhew. She had five brothers and a sister, named Bedy F., James F., Johnny Pat, Ruby Ruffin, Howard Arthur and Susan.
