Thornberry's father was John Reeves and his mother was Catherine Perry.  His paternal grandparents were George Reeves and Sarah Locker; his maternal grandparents were Obadiah Perry and Elizabeth. He had two brothers and six sisters, named Henderson, John, Jane, Rebecca, Susan, Ruth, Mildred and Nancy.  He was the fourth oldest of the nine children.
