His paternal grandparents were William IV Mainwaring and Elizabeth Lycester; his maternal grandfather was Hugh III 9th Baron of Kinderton De Venables. He had two brothers and seven sisters, named William Lord, Randle, Clemence, Elizabeth, Margery, Cecily, Joan, Ellen and Agnes. He was the second oldest of the ten children.-
