Elizabeth was born about 1470 in Raith, Fifeshire, Scotland. Elizabeth's father was John Bethune and her mother was Marjory Boswell. Her paternal grandparents were John Bethune and Katherine Stirling. She had four brothers and four sisters, named John, Robert, Andrew, James, Janet, Margaret, Isabel and Grissel. She was the fourth youngest of the nine children.-
