Ralph was born in 1856 in Egglescliffe Durham.1   Ralph's father was Henry Joseph Maltby and his mother was Elizabeth Mary Bradford.  His maternal grandparents were Sir Thomas Bradford and Mary Ann Atkinson. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Edward, Henry, Gerald, Julia and Elizth.  He was the youngest of the six children.
