Sarah was born in 1871 in Hayfield, Derby.1  Sarah's father was Luke Shaw and her mother was Hannah Waterhouse. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Norman, Samuel, Jas., Alice and Minnie.  She was the oldest of the six children.
