Edith was born in 1872 in Barnet.1  Edith's father was Charles Distell and her mother was Emma Chappell.  Her paternal grandparents were William Distill and Eliza Shelper (Shelpen). She had two brothers and two sisters, named William, Herbert, Alice and Minnie.  She was the third oldest of the five children.
