Johannes, known as Jan, was born on August 22nd, 1896 in Tulbagh, Cape Of Good Hope, South Africa and his baptism took place on November 30th, 1896 in NG Kerk Kruisvallei, Tulbagh conducted by the reverend.^1 2

Jan's father was Johannes Abraham Winterbach and his mother was Susanna Johanna Conradie.  His paternal grandparents were Hendrik Pieter Winterbach and Sara Adriana du Plessis. He had two brothers and a sister, named Hendrik, Johan and Susanna.  He was the youngest of the four children.  He died at the age of 39 in 1935.
