Hester, known as Kitty, was born on May 20th, 1881. Kitty's father was Johan Carel Winterbach and her mother was Susanna Jocina Malan. Her paternal grandparents were Dirk Jacobus Winterbach and Hester Francina Elizabetha Verster. She had six brothers and two sisters, named noname, Dirk, Johan, noname, Jacob, Dirk, Maria and Susanna.
