Hester was born on April 4th, 1864. Hester's father was Dirk Jacobus Winterbach and her mother was Hester Francina Elizabetha Verster. Her paternal grandparents were Johannes Carel Winterbach and Dorethea Elizabetha Theron. She had eight brothers and three sisters, named Johan, Isak, Dirk, Koos, Hendrik, Piet, Tobias, Louis, Susanna, Dorothea and Johanna. Johanna and Hester were fraternal twins.-
