ראובן was born in 2193. ראובן's father was יעקב ישראל and his mother is לאה. His paternal grandparents were יצחק and רבקה; his maternal grandfather is לבן. He is the oldest of seven children. He had five brothers and a sister, named שמעון, לוי, יהודה, יששכר, זבולון and דינה. He had six half-brothers named גד, אשר, דן, נפתלי, יוסף and בנימין.

The tribe of Reuben asked to be allowed to remain east of the Jordan, w here there was good pasture for their flocks.
