Josephus was born on March 12th, 1844 in Lummen.  Josephus' father was Petrus Joannes Vanheel and his mother was Clara Moons.  His maternal grandparents were Pierre Jean Moons and Marie Elisabeth Roelants.  He had three brothers and three sisters, named Charles Louis, Henricus, Severinus, Rosalie, Paulina and Amelia.  He was the youngest of the seven children.  He had a half-brother named Felix.
