Philomena was born on September 22nd, 1850 in Pael.1   Philomena's father was Ludovicus Engelen and her mother was Regina Gaethofs.  Her paternal grandparents were Petrus Engelen and Hélène Moons; her maternal grandparents were Petrus Gaethofs and Catherina Bervoets.  She was an only child.
