Doris was born in 1896 in Leeds, Yorkshire, , England.  Doris' father was William Pogson and her mother was Sarah Ann Roberts.  Her maternal grandparents were Thomas Roberts and Anne Clarkson. She had two brothers and six sisters, named William, Herbert, Clara, Nellie, Ellen, Ada, Beatrice and Custis.  She was the second youngest of the nine children.
