Bertie was born in March 1925.  Bertie's father was Malcolm Douglas Atken and his mother was Mabel Hannar.  His paternal grandparents were Malcolm Aitken and NN NN. He had seven brothers and three sisters, named George Henry, Arthur, William, Peter, Jackie, Leonard, Douglas, Anne, Kitty and Rosy.
