Ranald was born in 1164 in Isle of Skye, Scotland .  Ranald's father was Somerled Lord of the Isles and his mother is Ragnhilda.  His paternal grandfather was Gillebride Mac Gille Adomnan Lord of the Isles and his paternal grandmother is Sigurdsdottir; his maternal grandfather was Olaf the Red King of Man.  He was an only child.  He died at the age of 43 in 1207 in Scotland.
