Robert was born on September 19th, 1829 in Edinburgh, Scotland.1   Robert's father was Thomas VIPOND and his mother was Jean BORLAND. He had four brothers and five sisters, named Thomas, Archibald, John, George, Janet, Elizabeth, Jean, Ann and Margaret.  He was the second youngest of the ten children.
