Martha was born about 1826 in Pilling, Lancashire, England and her baptism took place there on February 18th, 1826. Martha's father was William Carter and her mother was Margaret Beesley. She had a brother and three sisters, named George, Betty, Mary and Elizabeth.  She was the second youngest of the five children.
