Robert was born on January 29th, 1795 in Lasswade, Midlothian, Scotland.  Robert's father was James Alexander and his mother was Mary Johnston. He had five brothers and two sisters, named James, John, Alexander, John, William, Mary and Janet.  He was the fourth oldest of the eight children.
