Janet was born on December 26th, 1803 in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.  Janet's father was William Aitchison and her mother was Elizabeth Nairne.  Her paternal grandparents were John Aitchison and Janet Tweedie; her maternal grandparents were John Nairne and Janet Robertson. She had four brothers and three sisters, named John, George, William, David, Elizabeth, Margaret and Mary Nairne.  She was the fourth oldest of the eight children.
