His maternal grandparents were Friedrich Jon “Fred” Sprecher and Louise “Christine” Gruning (Sprecher) Grunning. He had five brothers and four sisters, named Christian, Lou, Osker, Reinhold, Benjamin, Louise, Friedricka, Kathrina and Paulina. He was the eighth oldest of the ten children.
