- The pit head at Boldon. The lines in the foreground are a part of the the Tyne Dock to Consett route. The pit was sunk in 1869 and was closed in 1982. It was a lucky pit in that there were no major incidents during its lifetime, although, inevitably enough, it claimed the lives of a number of miners.

Grey (not "gray") properties were those within a potential slum clearance area which were not regarded as unfit, but would need to be demolished in order to acquire a convenient site for redevelopment. When compulsorily purchased by the Council, "grey" properties would attract market value. The unfit ("pink") properties would only be compensated at site value - usually about £5

High Street, Quarry Hill, Leeds

- Leeds had several areas with curative waters, famous in their time. This one in the Quarry Hill area was thought to have been regularly visited by Leeds historian Ralph Thoresby. The first bath to be built was the work of MP David Urquhart and his Manchester Foreign Affairs committee in 1857. The following year two members of Leeds Foreign Affairs Committee opened a Turkish Bath on this site. It was one of the first ten Victorian Turkish Baths in England. It was extended back to gain frontage at number 4 High Street. In 1870 it was named St Peter's Turkish Bath, then in 1876 the new proprietor, Tom Mountain renamed it St Peter's Spa. It was lost when the area was redeveloped. By the 1930s Quarry Hill Flats were being erected on this site. In this view, a pillaried entrance has been added to the baths. Signs advertise 'Working Men 6d, Don't Forget St Peter's Russian and Turkish Baths'. The baths occupy the upper floor above the corner shop.

- Photo shows the south side of the High Street and the junction with St Peter's Street. The High Street consisted of two storey back to back houses with tunnels leading to the courtyard. The Turkish baths on the High Street advertise baths for 6d. Russian and Sulphur baths are also available. The corner house had been converted to a grocer's shop. There are adverts on the wall for Oxo, Nestles Milk, Milkmaid Milk and Dewar's whisky.

- These old cottages are situated at Hill End off Hill End Road and number from left to right, 15 to 21. The stone wall, right surrounds the substantial gardens belonging to these cottages. Three of the properties have trellising around the doorway. They were demolished in accordance with the Housing Act of 1957.
Killingbeck Hospital, Leeds

- The hospital opened in 1904 and was finally closed in 1997. It had been first a smallpox hospital, then a TB sanotorium and became a renowned centre for the treatment of chest diseases, also noted for heart surgery.

Wolsey Car, which can be bought for £250, Cerebos salt, Ideal Milk, one bearing the advice 'To eat more fruit'. There are also a number of cinema and event posters. The Capitol Ballroom and cinema at Meanwood, The Regent Picture House showing Dorothy Phillips in 'Slender is a Woman', the Harehills Picture House, the Harehills Arcadian Pavilian. The Town Hall in Leeds has a 'biblical masquerade ball' on the Esater Monday. On April 19th Leeds United are playing Preston North End at Elland Road.

- On left, number 52 is the Albion Hotel public house, with a gas lamp over the entrance. The first junction is with Winteringhams Yard, then junction with Prospect Row, where there is a gas lamp on the pavement. This was part of the 'unhealthy' area of Leeds, poor sanitation was a major contributor to disease.

- Postcard view of St Bartholomew's Church and graveyard with the Old Chapel to the left. The Old Chapel was thought to date back in part to 1630 and was demolished in 1909. St Bartholomew's was consecrated in 1877 although the tower was not dedicated until 1904.

- View shows Leeds Parish Church which had been rebuilt in 1500 following a fire. When Dr Walter Hook became Vicar of Leeds in 1837 he was unhappy with the layout of the Church as shown here. He called for restoration and rearrangement although due to structural damage, the majority of the Church also needed to be rebuilt. The 'new' Parish Church was consecrated in 1841 and has a more ornate Gothic Revival style complete with pinnacles and turrets compared to the simpler Medieval style of the old church.
