William was born in 1840 in Hull. William's father was William Hewitt and his mother was Mary Headley (Hewitt). His paternal grandparents were Edward Hewitt and Elizabeth Mitchel. He had a brother and a sister, named Edward and Ann. He was the oldest of the three children.General Notes
