Charles' father was James Reuben Lemons and his mother was Tress Anjeline Crenshaw. His paternal grandparents were William Emmitt Lemons and Mary Lavinia Pounds. He had three brothers and five sisters, named William, Milburn, James, Lurline, Lois, Vera, Gladys and Ruby. He was the third oldest of the nine children.
