Jaan was born on June 23rd, 1835 in Tartumaa, Nõo kk, Aru. Jaan's father was Andres Tomson and his mother was Lena.  His maternal grandparents were Ado and Madli. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Peter, Hans, Karl, Michel, Ewa, Liso, Marri and Ann.  He was the seventh oldest of the nine children.  He died  due to tõbi at the age of 13 on October 19th, 1848 in Tartumaa, Nõo kk, Vastse-Nõo.
