Hugh Le Despenser
Hugh was born on March 1st, 1260 in England.1 Hugh's father was + Hugh (Lord Despenser) Le Despenser and his mother was Aliva Bassett. His paternal grandparents were Hugh Ledespencer and Margaret Risley; his maternal grandparents were Philip (Sir) Basset and Hawise De Lovaine. He had a sister named Eleanor. He was the younger of the two children. He died at the age of 66 on October 27th, 1326.1 General Notes
Hugh le Despenser, 1st and last Earl of Winchester was born on 1 March 1260/61.
He was the son of Sir Hugh le Despenser, 1st Lord Despenser and Aliva Basset
He married Isabella de Beauchamp, daughter of William de Beauchamp, 9th Earl of Warwick and Maud fitz John, before 1286.
He died on 27 October 1326 at age 65, hanged as a traitor.
Hugh le Despenser, 1st and last Earl of Winchester also went by the nick-name of Hugh 'the Elder'.
He succeeded to the title of 2nd Lord Despenser [E., 1264] on 4 August 1265.
He was created 1st Lord le Despenser [England by writ] on 24 June 1295.
In 1312 he represented King Edward II in negotiating a treaty with his nobles a tthe time of Gaveston's murder by them.
He fought in the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314.
In February 1314/15 he was banished from court by the machinations of his enemies.
In August 1321 he was disinherited and exiled in perpetuity for his alleged misgovernment and malign influence of King Edward II.
In January 1321/22 his exile was reversed.
He was created 1st Earl of Winchester [England] on 10 May 1322.
After King Edward II fled to Wales, he was convicted as a traitor and all of his honours forfeited.
