Gerhard was born in 1160 in Grimbergen, Brabant, Belgium.1 Gerhard's father was Gerhard van Berthout and his mother was Mathilde de Ninove. His paternal grandparents were Walther van Berthout and Sophie van Looz. He was an only child. He died at the age of 40 in 1200.1 General Notes
