Theophano was born in 0941 in Constantinople, Byzantium Empire.1   Theophano's father was Anastaso of Byzantium and her mother was <Unknown>.  She was an only child.

Theophano and Romanus were married in 0956 in Constantinople, Turkey.2   They had two sons and two daughters, named Basileos, Konstantinos, Theophanu and Anna.
